Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
